Die ersten Waldenser waren keine Mystiker. Man findet bei ihnen nicht einmal einen Ansatz zu einer mystischen „imitatio Cristi“, wie das bei Franziskus von Assisi der Fall ist. Vielmehr wollten sie „neue Apostel“ sein. Sie fühlten sich durch die Lektüre der Evangelien als Laien zum freiwilligen Verzicht auf ihren Reichtum und zum Predigtamt berufen und berechtigt. Die „vita apostolica“ war ihnen zufolge der einzige Weg zum Heil. Die Kirchenkritik der ersten Waldenser hatte deshalb auch keinen mystischen Hintergrund, sondern war Folge ihres apostolisches Selbstverständnisses.

Valdes and his followers were not mystics. One cannot even find the beginnings of a mystical "imitatio Christi"  among them, as was the case with Francis of Assisi. The Waldenses wanted instead to be "new apostles". By way of their reading of the Gospels they felt themselves called and authorized as lay people to renounce wealth voluntarily and to assume the office as preaching. As they saw it, the  “vita apostolica” was the only path leading to salvation.  The Waldensees regarded themselves “new apostles”. Consequently the church criticism of the first  Waldensians did not have a  mystical background, but was the result of theier apostolic self-image.
