Summary/Notes: |
The Waldensians in Russian Lands (14th-16th century) As early as the 16th century, sources related to medieval Waldensianism evoked their diffusion as far as «Sarmatia». Comparing testimonies shows that such a toponym referred to Russia rather than to Muscovy. The tradition is confirmed by a number of facts: a Waldensian «magister» from Russo-Galatia at the end of the 14th century ; the syncretism characterizing Baltic and Ruthene hussitism in the 15th century; and above all, the nature of the heterodox movement in Novgorod and Moscow in the 15th and 16th century. In the latter case, what is most striking is not the fringe of the Waldensian diaspora which had settled in Russian lands but the influence the Valdo-Hussite tradition had on heterodox tendencies in the Slavo-orthodox world. |
